Exploration: Tech Tips for Engaging Performance
Limited Capacity seats available

In a world that asked us to pivot from onstage performances to online, we had to learn new skills on the fly in order to bring the same quality show our audience is used to. Not only that, we have an opportunity now to reach people that otherwise never would have seen us. In this workshop you'll not only learn how to make dynamic technical choices for online streaming that increase the production value of your show, but you'll also understand the importance of why you should double down on an online presence even as things open back up.

Onstage we hone our storytelling skills to entertain and captivate audiences. Offstage, storytelling skills can be applied for those objectives, and to persuade, motivate, teach, and lead.

In this interactive practicum, we will develop our skills and mindsets as storytellers so that we
can better communicate with clarity, purpose and inspiration.

Using your own specific real-life examples and projects, you will:
● Understand the power of story as a meaning-making and influencing tool
● Acquire tools for identifying your message and the needs, values, and preferences of
your audience
● Use key structures to create well-organized narratives that drive toward your key
message
● Distinguish between action and description in order to craft compelling and
memorable stories customized for the moment and the audience
● Practice adapting stories in the moment based on listener reaction and feedback
● Receive and apply individual coaching and feedback
● Learn to listen for and to handle objections in real-time

Workshop: Transforming Improv: Build Your Own Form
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Are you tired of watching different groups play the same ten short-form games? Let’s break the mold together! Instead of trying to fit into the box of “classic short form,” we’re gonna crack it wide open and create our own games. We’ll identify the types of games you like most, discuss your unique interests, and combine this information to create new games which highlight your natural strengths. Or - if you prefer longer forms - we can make a midform! We’ll discuss the essentials of plot structure and techniques for editing and transitions, identify the types of narratives you most enjoy, and create and share our new structures in an epic showcase. Maybe you'll stick to the rules of ‘classic improv,’ or maybe you'll use props, costumes, and music. The possibilities are endless!
Students will learn:
  • The basic elements of popular long and short form pieces
  • Creative scene editing
  • How to build short form games and construct an original mid-form

Virtual Maestro: Improv Comedy Competition hosted by Hideout Theatre, Austin, TX, USA
The Hideout Theatre hosts a Virtual Maestro of international improv talents for a night of games and scenes based on audience suggestions — but only one of them will make it to the end of the show and be crowned MAESTRO for the week and awarded the coveted Canadian five-dollar bill.

For time being, Maestro is a VIRTUAL show. That means that rather than being on stage, it will be live-streamed on Twitch.

The show is free to watch, but ticket purchases or donations are highly appreciated as we work to keep improv theaters and organizations afloat.

If you want to help determine the winner, you’ll need to create a free Twitch account to post in the chat room, so go do that right now at http://twitch.tv/ and follow the hideout’s channel: https://www.twitch.tv/hideouttheatre

No Shoes Allowed (AAPI Sketch Comedy Team) Screening & Talkback
Limited Capacity seats available

Join members of No Shoes Allowed, an all AAPI Sketch Comedy team to view some of their work before and during the lockdown! In the first half for the session, we will present original sketches, live performance footage, and web content as we sought avenues for continued creative expression in unprecedented times. And stay for the second half's Q&A to discuss AAPI representation in the entertainment industry today. Don't make our families judge you for wearing your shoes inside and then have to come over to your place to watch you until you clean.

BIO:
No Shoes Allowed is an all AAPI sketch comedy team born from the Second City Hollywood in 2018 and performing monthly on their main theater until the 'rona and plans to perform again once the theaters reopen. These decisions, the choices we have made, have been well received by our parents...because they still think it's a hobby. And we will not rest until shoes are removed from feet inside homes. It's the right thing to do.

The power of improvisation, play and performance for social change and human development is profound, alive, transforming and growing by leaps and bounds.

Early on in the pandemic; 100 impro performance activists gathered online to improvisationally create a transformational community; since June of 2020 the Global Play Brigade has provided over 250 free impro and emotional support workshops on Zoom and WhatsAPP, to 5000 people from 60 countries as a way to socially connect, create new possibilities, and support our fellow human beings through this crisis.

Global Play Brigadiers; Improvisers, clowns, educators, therapists, musicians, scholars, artists, are giving their time and talent to co-create with thousands of others in the building of a movement/network/community that reaches into homes, workplaces, communities, universities, and across geographies. We are not interested in simply “going back to normal” when/if the pandemic ends. The Global Play Brigade and its multi-cultural/disciplined activists are using this window of opportunity that the pandemic opened in many different ways to cross borders, barriers and boundaries -- bringing play and impro to people everywhere as a way to listen, talk, heal, laugh, co-create and change the world together.

Join Brigadiers Cathy Salit, Rita Ezenwa-Okoro, and Omar Ali in this interactive session to explore how to continue to grow and transform the global improvisation movement for social change.

Workshop: Musical Improv via Zoom
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

The pandemic forced everyone in improv online in March, 2020; one of the first things we learned about was LAG. It's impossible to do improvised music on Zoom - or is it? This workshop will explore how a 34-year veteran of improv and his team pivoted to Zoom and embraced the situation instead of fighting it. We'll briefly talk about audio settings, and tools - but we'll spend most of the time playing and singing and laughing. Improv music is liberating and transformative. Let's make some music together!

Pre-requisite: updated to the latest version of Zoom. Best experienced on a laptop or desktop, but don't let your phone or tablet stop you.

Limited to 12 active participants and 18 observers.

Exploration: Ensemble! with Dan O'Connor & Jeff Katzman
Limited Capacity seats available

Loneliness – it has become an epidemic in Western cultures. Come play with us as we explore the dynamics behind the myths of isolation and disconnection. How can we learn to bring more of ourselves to our relationships, wonder about those around us, and engage in perspective taking to feel more connected to our friends, families, work communities, and neighborhoods. Just as a team of improvisers responds to one another on stage, so can we learn to do this in our lives – whether in a virtual or real- life situation.

Jeff Katzman and Dan O'Connor share the core skill sets of their book Ensemble! Integrating depth psychology and improvisation, this class brings focus to how we show up for ourselves and connect with others. The class includes brief lectures as well as demonstrations of core skill sets through improvisation exercises while integrating question and answer periods.

SLAY by Ripley
SLAY is a live-streamed monster hunting monologue show, performed entirely online by Ripley Improv.

SLAY marries improv, theater, monologues, inspiration from streaming TTRPGs, and the tech tools that we've all had to embrace more since the beginning of pandemic life last year to create a unique and exciting piece of live-streamed digital theater. The show opens Friday May 7th, and runs every Friday in May and June at Twitch.tv/RipleyImprov.

The premise of the show is layered: the audience clicks on the show's Twitch link, and gets a peek inside a shadowy monster-hunting government agency's computer database. One actor serves as a ringleader of sorts for the performers, taking up the role of a Monster Profiler under the employ of the secret government agency D.O.R.M. (Department of Occult Risk Management). The Profiler records a video report of her process in assembling a complete picture of a new monster each week-- and that's where the rest of the ensemble comes in.

If you want to add suggestions and interact with the show, you’ll need to create a free Twitch account to post in the chat room, so go do that right now at http://twitch.tv/ and then as showtime go to: Twitch.tv/RipleyImprov.

Devoted & Disgruntled: How is the world transforming improvisation? How can impro transform the world? Block A
To join this Devoted & Disgruntled Open Space event, you will need to register separately HEREYou will receive login information in your confirmation email.

Love impro? Passionate about improv? Have a special place in your heart for the art of improvisation? This is the online event for you. Come and be part of a global conversation about making it up as you go along.

Improbable’s Devoted and Disgruntled events have been running for 16 years, in which time tens of thousands of people have gathered to discuss, work, plot and plan ways to celebrate and share what is great about theatre and the performing arts and take action on the things that urgently need to change. This event is focussed on the world of improvisation and whatever it is about that world that makes your heart sing or your blood boil.

The format is Open Space so no speeches, no panel of experts, no pre-set agenda (feel familiar? This is basically an improvised conference). The agenda is created at the event and anyone can post a session about anything. Then you go only to the discussions and groups that you want to. You participate as much or as little as you want, you come and go as you please.

Improvisation, along with the vast majority of the world, is facing an uncertain future and a daunting set of challenges. Some of these have arrived like a bolt from the blue but some are undeniably self-inflicted and real action to address them is long overdue. The best way for us to begin the work of meeting those challenges is to come together as a community, with our passions, our conflicts, our different philosophies and a shared joy in not having the faintest idea what happens next.

Whether you're improvisation is performance or applied, therapy or conflict resolution, actor or audience, whatever your relationship to this practice your voice is needed in this vital conversation.

This will be a continuous 24 hour online event. One turn of the world. Improvisers from everywhere on earth joined up as never before. A precious chance to learn and connect to what improvisation means to people somewhere else, people different to you. A global improvisation.

Devoted & Disgruntled: How is the world transforming improvisation? How can impro transform the world? Closing Circle
To join this Devoted & Disgruntled Open Space event, you will need to register separately HERE. You will receive login information in your confirmation email.

Lee Simpson, Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Improbable

Workshop: Process of Transformation with Randy Dixon (LIVE from Seattle, USA)
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Transformative energy in improvisation is best expressed for an audience through the personal example you set. We get the audience to think about their lives by examining our own lives, moving forward, and showing that life is a process.

This will explore how to use aspects of your own life to inform your improvisation and find deeper meaning for your audience. Using the skills of performance to further accentuate and extend the impact of your work on everyone in the room, we will look at our relationship to the stage and the audience relationship to us.

Limited to 10 active participants and up to 300 observers - if the event is full, join the waitlist and still register to observe the session.

Act Social Screening & Talkback
Limited Capacity seats available

From politics to medicine, Act Social, a documentary film, explores the healing potential of applied improvisation. Features famed improv comedian Colin Mochrie of Whose Line is it, Anyway?
The principles of improv, such as “Yes And,” lead to hilarious comedy onstage but can they also be used to solve problems like depression, social anxiety, or conflict? Applied improvisers believe the answer is “Yes!”
In our documentary film we show what happens when different kinds of people try improv: refugees, tragedy survivors, couples in counseling, and people involved in political debate.
In Act Social, you will also meet improv teachers and drama therapists who work with communities in need, giving audiences a never-before-seen look at the possibilities improv can bring to real life.

The screening will be followed by a talkback with the film's director Sean A. Mulvihill
